Crypto CVD: Cumulative Volume Delta
CVD shows which side has been more aggressive over time. Here is how it is calculated, how divergences work, and where it can mislead you.
What is Cumulative Volume Delta (CVD)?
Cumulative Volume Delta (CVD) is the running total of volume delta, which is buy volume minus sell volume. It shows whether aggressive market buyers or aggressive market sellers have dominated over time, and is usually compared with price.
Volume tells you how much traded. Delta tells you which side was more aggressive. CVD adds delta up over time so that you can see the direction and persistence of aggression rather than isolated candles.
It is a core tool in orderflow analysis, and it becomes more useful when read together with price, open interest and structure than it is on its own.
How does CVD work and how is it calculated?
Buy volume is volume traded by buyers who used market orders, hitting the ask. Sell volume is volume traded by sellers who used market orders, hitting the bid.
Delta = buy volume − sell volume. CVD = the sum of all delta from a chosen starting point.
The absolute CVD value depends on where the calculation begins, so analysts focus on the slope and shape of the line and how it relates to price, not on the number itself.
| Candle | Buy vol. | Sell vol. | Delta | CVD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 120 | 80 | +40 | +40 |
| 2 | 70 | 110 | −40 | 0 |
| 3 | 150 | 90 | +60 | +60 |
| 4 | 60 | 130 | −70 | −10 |
What do rising and falling CVD mean?
Rising CVD
Aggressive buying is outweighing aggressive selling over the period. Buyers are paying the spread to get filled.
Falling CVD
Aggressive selling is outweighing aggressive buying. Sellers are hitting the bid to exit or open shorts.
Flat CVD
Aggression is balanced. Price may be moving on thin liquidity or on passive orders rather than on market orders.
Bullish and bearish CVD divergence
A divergence appears when price and CVD disagree. It does not tell you when or whether price will turn, but it flags that the move is not being supported by the same behaviour that produced the previous swing.
Treat divergence as a question, not an answer. Strong trends can show divergence for a long time. Pair it with structure, such as a liquidity sweep or change of character, before giving it weight.
Reading CVD with price, open interest and orderflow
| Price | CVD | Possible reading (context-dependent) |
|---|---|---|
| Rising | Rising | Move supported by aggressive buying. Healthy participation. |
| Rising | Falling or flat | Buying is not aggressive. The rise may be passive-driven or short covering. Look for fading momentum. |
| Falling | Falling | Move supported by aggressive selling. |
| Falling | Rising | Aggressive buyers are active but price still falls. Possible passive selling or absorption of buyers. |
CVD + open interest. Rising CVD with rising open interest suggests new positions are being opened on aggressive buying. Rising CVD with falling open interest can mean shorts are closing, which is a different market altogether.
CVD + orderflow. Use footprint charts to see where within a candle the delta occurred, and whether it was absorbed at a level.
Limits and common misinterpretations of CVD
Not a signal
CVD describes aggression. It does not say what price will do next. Rising CVD can occur before a decline.
Data coverage
CVD from one exchange or product does not represent the whole market. Spot, perpetual futures and different venues can disagree.
Classification
Buy/sell attribution depends on how trades are labelled. Differences in data feeds can produce different CVD lines.
Starting point
The absolute level is arbitrary. Compare slopes and swings, not raw values.
Hedging and market makers
Delta can be influenced by hedging flow that does not reflect directional views.
Absorption
Aggressive buying absorbed by large passive sellers will lift CVD while price stalls. That is information, not a bullish signal.
CVD in VELANTHOR
VELANTHOR places CVD beside price, open interest, footprint data and liquidations, so a divergence can be checked against positioning and forced flow instead of being read in isolation.

Frequently asked questions
What is crypto CVD?
CVD, or Cumulative Volume Delta, is the running total of buy volume minus sell volume. It shows whether aggressive buyers or sellers have dominated over time.
How is CVD calculated?
For each period, delta = market buy volume − market sell volume. CVD is the cumulative sum of delta from a chosen starting point.
What does rising CVD mean?
Aggressive buyers are outweighing aggressive sellers. It indicates buy pressure but does not guarantee that price will continue to rise.
What does falling CVD mean?
Aggressive sellers are outweighing aggressive buyers, showing sell pressure over the period.
What is a CVD divergence?
A divergence occurs when price and CVD move differently, for example price makes a higher high while CVD makes a lower high. It suggests the move has weaker aggressive participation.
Is CVD a trading signal?
No. CVD is a contextual indicator. It should be combined with structure, location, open interest and risk management.
How does CVD relate to open interest?
CVD shows which side is aggressive. Open interest shows whether positions are being opened or closed. Together they help distinguish new positioning from covering.
How does VELANTHOR use CVD?
VELANTHOR presents CVD alongside price, open interest, footprint data and liquidations so traders can compare aggression with positioning and structure.
